Recently, a thread appeared on alt.fashion (if you haven't checked out this news group, you must!) that I thought crossdressers would find interesting: fixing makeup in public places. I would guess that most crossdressers would consider this a no-no and a dead giveaway. I always thought applying makeup in public would be wrong for me to do.
Much to my surprise, the fashion mavens of that newsgroup overwhelmingly felt otherwise. The consensus was that minor fixes to makeup in public were OK, especially in restaurants! These fixes were pretty much limited to lipstick and a touch of powder to the face and only during social occassions. It was considered taboo to apply lipstick at the table during a business lunch or meeting. Other makeup touch-ups, such as blush, eye shadow or liner, and especially fragrences, were definately considered inappropriate in public.
One participant in the thread made an interesting point. She noted that for herself, she tends to make some exagerated facial expressions when applying lipstick and felt it was better to do so in private. Well taken! At any rate, here is the complete thread, minus some message header information. Enjoy!

She then powders her nose and applies her lipstick for all the world to see. My parents refer to this as a "forties thing." I think she looks very elegant when she does it.

Date: 27 Oct 1997 11:29:43 GMTI love this quote from Scarlett's catalogue - Only Real Women Repair in Public.
Depends on who I'm with, I guess. At a business type dinner, I'd never put on lipstick. I wouldn't do it on a first date. If I'm with a group of female friends at a cheesy pizza place or in the mall, yeah, I'll throw on some lipstick, maybe even a Blot Powder quick fix (hey if you had skin as oily as mine you'd do it too...when I swim in the ocean they have to clean off all the animals afterwards...)
Blush, eye anything, and foundation seem to be no-nos in my book. But I don't think I've ever looked at anyone repairing in public and thought "Oh, how tacky". I often have the "lipstick on teeth" syndrome, and better to whip out the mirror than go around grinning all day looking like a complete idiot.

Date: 27 Oct 1997 14:53:30 GMTimho, a dab of powder and application of lipstick is fine at the table amongst friends or a casual lunch. however, when lunching with clients, or boss in a non casual environment a visit to the powder room is the most appropriate way.......but please never ever douse oneself in public with fragrance or hairspray!!!
not exactly miss manners huh????

Comments?Well I don't like to apply makeup in public- not because I'm Ms. Manners or anything, but because I tend to make funny faces during application! How embarassing :P Does anyone else's face have these 'refex' movements when applying eyeliner or lipstick (mouth opening or frowning, etc.)? Maybe I'm just extraordinarily strange...

No, I do the same thing, especially with blush and mascara! That is the exact reason why I wait to reapply these til I get home or in my car, before I take off, of course. But lipstick and powder touch up is quite ok in my opinion.

Date: Mon, 27 Oct 1997 23:38:34 GMTI think today is a perfect example, during lunch, right before another interview, I sat in the cafeteria in school, the ENGINEERING cafe and pulled out my lipstick, and my blot powder, put on lipstick and blotted my face :) I would do the same at the dinner table, AFTER dinner. However, I wouldn't do it during a business dinner or lunch :) I guess it's a good idea to judge it by the company around you to see if they would be offended.. engineers? I can do it right in front of them, and they wouldn't notice :) hee hee [yes, another jab at my fellow students.]

Comments?I only apply makeup at a restaurant table when I'm with alt.fashionites! <vbg> Otherwise at a restaurant I will go to the bathroom. As for other public places, I apply lipstick and pressed powder only if people can't watch me.
